Chivas midfield has Brazilian flavor Nagamura, Saragosa partnership adding flair, stability to middle 11/06/2009 5:33 PM By Jeffrey King / MLSnet.com

CARSON, Calif. -- Paulo Nagamura and Marcelo Saragosa have a lot in common. They were both born in Brazil (only 620 miles apart), they both speak Portuguese, and lately, they both have been patrolling the center of the Chivas USA midfield.

Nagamura and Saragosa have been paired together in central midfield for some part of each of the Red-and-White's last four games. With a strong performance from the two in last Sunday's first leg of the playoff SuperClásico against the LA Galaxy, it's a partnership that could become important if Chivas USA's 2009 playoff campaign is to continue.

"Paulo and I have played together before and we know well how each other plays," said Saragosa. "We also both speak Portuguese, so that helps make it easy to play with him as well."

Nagamura has been a constant presence in central midfield this season. The 26-year-old has started in 25 games for Chivas USA in 2009, and has partnered with a few different players in the center of the field, including Jesse Marsch, Sacha Kljestan, Michael Lahoud and Saragosa.

"I've had a couple of guys playing there next to me," said Nagamura. "I try to keep doing the job that I have been doing of being a two-way midfielder. I try to be solid in the middle to help the defense but go forward and make some runs to create some space for the other midfielders also. It all depends who I'm playing next to."

Nagamura is happy to partner with Saragosa. The two are old friends and feel comfortable playing together.

"Marcelo brings a lot of defensive work for our team," said Nagamura. "He's pretty solid in there. He's going to cover a lot of ground and that gives me more freedom to maybe join the attack and make some more runs forward.

"When we play together," he continued, "we have a very good understanding of how to cover each other and how to support each other on the field. My communication with Marcelo is also a great asset."

Saragosa joined Chivas USA on July 17 of this year in a trade with FC Dallas. He has been a versatile asset for the Red-and-White and has played at both right back as well as in the midfield.

"I played on the right in Dallas, but I feel much happier in the middle," said Saragosa. "My natural position is in the middle. I know where to be and how to create space."

Saragosa is glad to be playing alongside Nagamura, and feels that his talents blend well with Nagamura's.

"I think I'm a little stronger than Paulo because I'm bigger," said Saragosa. "But he knows the offense well and moves forward much better. When we play together, we make a good team because our talents complement each other."

While there is no certainty that Nagamura and Saragosa will again be paired together in Sunday's match, one thing is for sure: Chivas USA will need to come out firing if they are going to triumph over their in-stadium rivals.

"We have to attack," said Nagamura. "We have to have numbers forward in order to score. I'm going to look for the ball in the spots where I know I can hit the ball well and hopefully some goals come in this important game."

Brazilian style blending in for Chivas Santos, Saragosa join Nagamura for Red-and-White's playoff push

The additions of Maicon Santos (L) and Marcelo Saragosa have Chivas eyeing a playoff spot. (Getty)

CARSON, Calif. -- Among the languages spoken on the field at a Chivas USA practice are English, Spanish, and sometimes even a little Serbian. But the recent additions of Marcelo Saragosa and Maicon Santos have added another vernacular to the pitch: Portuguese.

Saragosa was acquired on July 17 in a trade with FC Dallas. Santos arrived in Los Angeles much more recently, joining the Red-and-White on loan from Brazilian side Bonsucesso Futebol Clube on August 21. The two join Paulo Nagamura as the three Brazilian players on the Chivas USA roster.

"I have nothing but good things to say about Paulo and Maicon," said Saragosa. "They're good players and they're good friends. It's great that the three of us can work together to chase the MLS championship."

Santos, Nagamura, and Saragosa, who are 25, 26, and 27 respectively, were each born in the southern region of Brazil. Santos was born in Rio de Janeiro, Nagamura in São Paolo, and Saragosa in the inland town of Campo Grande.

"It's nice to have another two Brazilians on the team," said Nagamura. "Especially because I've already played with Marcelo, so I have a good understanding with him."

Nagamura and Saragosa were teammates on the LA Galaxy in the 2005 and 2006 seasons, helping the team to an MLS Cup Championship and a U.S. Open Cup title, both in '05.

While all three players acknowledge that Brazil has a reputation for a certain brand of soccer, each is careful to point out the importance of gelling with the team rather than trying to embody a certain technique.

"There is a Brazilian style," said Nagamura. "It's more technical or fancy. Brazilian players like to do step-overs, use their feet a lot, and they're very patient going forward.

"But it's not about the 'Brazilian' style that we bring to the team," he continued. "It's about adapting to the style of the team. We all have our own style. One is more technical, the other may be more defensive or creative. We each need to bring the little things in our game and adapt them to make the team better."

With more and more international players plying their trade in MLS, the league has become a melting pot of style and technique.

"The soccer in the world now is becoming more mixed and universal," said Nagamura. "There are distinct styles, like Brazil's, but these styles are all blending together."

Chivas USA's trio of brazileños has helped the team make a serious bid for a fourth consecutive appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs, notching five goals and three assists between them so far this season. And while they're proud of their Brazilian roots, they are, first and foremost, members of Chivas USA.

"I don't worry about style," said Santos with a smile. "I just do my job and work hard to give more every time for the team."

Saragosa begins training with Chivas,Midfielder ready to contribute to Red-and-White's success

Marcelo Saragosa will try to help Chivas USA achieve their ultimate goal of winning the league.

CARSON, Calif. -- Marcelo Saragosa took part in training for the first time since joining Chivas USA on Thursday morning, but the Brazilian native is no stranger to Los Angeles. The Red-and-White's newest midfielder is excited to be back in southern California and is ready to contribute to the team's success.
Chivas USA acquired Saragosa on July 17 in a trade with FC Dallas that sent Atiba Harris to Texas.
Marcelo Saragosa will try to help Chivas USA achieve their ultimate goal of winning the league.

"I'm really happy to be here with Chivas and to be part of a group that's so strong," said Saragosa. "I love this city, my family loves this city, and I have a lot of friends from Brazil who live here. It's awesome."

One of those friends is Chivas USA midfielder Paulo Nagamura, with whom Saragosa is reuniting for the third time in his career. The two first were teammates in the youth system of Brazilian club São Paulo before both playing with the LA Galaxy during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Saragosa is delighted to be playing yet again with his old friend.

"Being with Paulo again after so many years is great," he said. "We have a great friendship, so it's good for us to [be back together.]"

Saragosa's career has taken him from São Paulo to Los Angeles and then on to Dallas in 2006 before finally arriving at Chivas USA. He has notched two goals and six assists during his six years in MLS.

"I bring a lot of experience to this team," said Saragosa. "I have played a long time in this league. I want to work with all my teammates to get into the playoffs and hopefully be champion."

Saragosa joins a Chivas USA squad that is currently tied for the fourth-best record in the league.

"Chivas is a very strong team," he said. "They've gotten some bad results recently but I believe they have a great team with very good players. We have to keep our heads up and continue working toward getting three points."

Saragosa could get his first minutes for the Red-and-White on August 8 when the team travels to Colorado. Chivas USA have already beaten the Rapids once this season, earning a 2-1 victory on March 21.

"I hope that we can get some good results and accomplish our ultimate goal, which is to win the league," said Saragosa.
